What Is Object Velocity?

Object Velocity is the rate at which a physical object — a material lot, a work-in-process unit, a finished good — moves through your production flow. It is calculated as distance traveled through the flow divided by elapsed time. High velocity means you convert raw material into shipped product fast; low velocity means objects are waiting. Most factories are flow-limited, not capacity-limited: units spend 80–95% of their life waiting between steps.
